WIP: The Watch and the Looking Glass

I just wanted to throw a little hint at what I'm doing out into the ether. I'm currently working on a novella right now. The title is about 95% firm at this point. THE WATCH AND THE LOOKING GLASS caught me by the ears and said, "Pick me, you fool!" That voice, by the way, was done in a Gandalf rendition. And, of course, when Gandalf speaks to me, I generally listen.

I better give you all a general idea of what the story is going to be about. Basically, the protagonist, Randal Thoare (kudos to anyone who gets it) walks into an antique shop and walks out with the means to change his future. I think there is a bit of ALICE IN WONDERLAND meets action-adventure speculative fiction. Another thing that I wanted to mention is the story is what I call a Genre Smashup. Tentatively, the novella is going to have seven chapters. Each chapter is going to try and capture my version of seven different spec-fic genres or sub-genres. I'll do my best not to screw it up.

That's…

Writing Prompts - All in a Name

Hello there writers, readers, and readers who want to write!
As you may have already noticed, this is going to be a writing prompts post. Hopefully you are as excited as I am about them.
It's always fun to come up with interesting ways to twist writing or your thinking about writing.
So, without further adieu, here are the writing prompts:

1.  Book Title Inspirations In this prompt, pick a book off your bookshelf at random (or digital bookshelf if you prefer). Scan the title of said book and pick the word that jumps out at you first. Now write a story, poem, or whatever suits your fancy with that word being the focus of the creative endeavor of your choice.
Here is an example:  I went to my bookshelf and grabbed THE SHADOW RISING by Robert Jordan. I would write a short story about shadows and whatever significance they would have to the world in the short story.

2.  Familiar Words with Unfamiliar Meanings This is similar in the way that you discover your creative theme. In fact, you…

The Colliding Empires Update

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Colliding Empires short story FRIENDS and FOES is complete. I'm just working on edits right now. I've also begun on the next story in the series, FAULT and BLAME. If I keep on my current schedule, I'll have stories 4 and 5 done by the end of the month.

I should also note that I won't be releasing it immediately. I'm going to finish the rest of the volume 1 collection first, stories 1-5. This is more of a marketing strategy than anything. I want to be prepared in a release schedule for all the stories that allows me to get the word out as well as have some cover reveals, etc. While I'm glad that some people have really enjoyed my stories, the sales and downloads have been fairly limited. For the rest of my stories in this series, I want to generate some buzz before releases. Once they are all written, I can plan out the releases and allow myself time to get the word out on a broader level. I'll be doing the same t…

I wanted to show these to anyone who hasn't seen them yet. This is a great video series with some awesome information for writers. And, of course, it features Patrick Rothfuss, one of my all-time favorite authors (and of course his epic beard). I bow down to the bearded one. . .all right. Let's get this show on the road -- onward, to glory!!!

What Am I Doing Right Now?

So, what's new at jacobdonley.com? Well, as of right now, these are projects that I'm working on:
Short Stories
The Colliding Empires - Friends & Foes

I was about half done with this story when I realized the reason I couldn't progress any further was that I was trying to force the story in a direction that it didn't want to go. So, I am in the process of rewriting the story. Hopefully, this will allow me to move forward and finish the story in a timely manner.

Phoenix Dawn

This is a more recent fantasy, short story that I have written and edited about a family's flight from dark creature intent catching them. After he catches up to them, what will be its purpose with them? (Submitted for publication, waiting for response).

The Call of Fate

This is a medieval fantasy, short story that I am currently writing about soldiers for an empire in the middle of a campaign as they are about to attack the capital city. (Submitted for publication, waiting for response).

Author Interview: Richard Johnson

This week, I have the pleasure of bringing you an interview with Richard Johnson. This is his breakout first novel, DEAD DRUNK:  SURVIVING THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE ... ONE BEER AT A TIME. Enjoy!!!

[JD] Can you tell me a little about yourself?

[RJ] I am a bit of an odd duck, who can be very shy one moment and outgoing the next. I like to think that I have a great sense of humor and I love animals of all kinds. I have an amazing wife and adorable twin boys.

[JD] When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

[RJ] I have been a bit of a story teller and daydreamer my whole life. The two pretty much go together. When I was younger, I read every fantasy book I could get my hands on.

[JD] What inspired you to write your first book?

[RJ] I watch almost every zombie movie that comes out and most of them are horrible. I definitely enjoy them, but still, they suck. So I decided I could write a better zombie story, from a different perspective, than what was out there. I knew I had the ideas…
